27-Jan-2018: Come and Sing Verdi Requiem

Saturday 27 January 2018 11.00am-6.30pm

All Saints Church, Hoole CH2 3HZ

Our annual choral workshop is an opportunity for all singers, to rehearse and perform Verdi’s Requiem with Chester Bach Singers.

The Chester Bach Singers January workshops have become legendary across the North, with singers coming from places as distant as Newcastle and Aberystwyth, many returning year after year. In 2018 we invite you to Come and Sing Verdi’s Requiem! This is a choral piece like no other, dramatic, very lyrical and full of lung-bursting phrases for the singer – a chance to shake off your post-Christmas blues! Chester Bach Singers and guests will perform all the choral and soloist with choir movements of the work alongside four of the North’s most exciting young vocal talents as soloists. The Chester Bach Singers workshops are known for the high standards achieved in a short time under the baton of seasoned conductor, Martin Bussey.

THE WORK

The Messa da Requiem is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass (Requiem) for four soloists, double choir and orchestra by Giuseppe Verdi. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired. The first performance, at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, marked the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death. The work was at one time called the Manzoni Requiem. It is rarely performed in liturgy, but rather in concert form of around 85–90 minutes in length. Musicologist David Rosen calls it ‘probably the most frequently performed major choral work composed since the compilation of Mozart’s Requiem’.Wikipedia contributors. 'Requiem (Verdi).' GETTING THERE

This year we are holding our workshop at All Saints Church, Hoole (CH2 3HZ). This is the church with the spire on Hoole Road, Chester. It has excellent facilities and is about 10 minutes walk from Chester railway station. There is limited parking at the church and we would like to save that for people with reduced mobility. We are very grateful to Hoole United Reformed Church (CH2 3NT) for giving us permission to use its large car park for this event. The car park is on your right as you drive towards Chester. It is then only a 5-minute walk to All Saints. We ask that you make a donation of £2 towards the URC’s programme of modernisation, if using their car park on the day. There is also parking in the streets around the church.
